One of Canada’s happiest and most beloved faces has fallen asleep forever.😢❤🙏
Smiley is a popular dog ❤
Smiley, a blind golden retriever who worked as a therapy dog for nearly 15 years, was put to sleep after three months of cancer. “It’s the only way to repay what he’s done for all of us.”
Smiley dog owner Joanne George posted on Instagram the day before the dog said goodbye to his friend. “We’ll let him go tomorrow.”
Smiley comforts seniors in nursing homes, children with autism and patients of all ages at nearby hospitals in Stouffville, Ontario, Global News reports. His fans come from all over the world.
Ask the 200,000 people who are following him on Instagram.
Of all Smiley’s friends, George’s son, Shepard, will miss his friend the most. One of the last pictures George posted after his dog died was of Shepard visiting Smiley’s final resting place.
“A boy and his dog ended up having to part,” she wrote. “Shepherd knows the pain he feels is the result of always loving others with all his heart. Like myself, he has no regrets. The pain was worth all that he gave us.”
George announced Smiley’s previous cancer diagnosis on Facebook.
“It’s not easy to get rid of this… they found a tumor on Smiley’s stomach and a mass on his liver as well.”
She shared. “The dog that I always thought would live forever won’t have much time left with us. We are obviously very shocked and very sad . He’s been very happy lately when he gets an extra kick in his stride, so this is confusing. “
Smiley fell asleep at 12:30 pm. on October 14 and commemorated with a candlelight vigil.
CBC Toronto created a video celebrating the life of this incredibly kind dog that has since resonated with thousands of Smiley fans around the world.
“With Smiley’s passing there have been so many people sending love and care to him, which leads me to believe that there are still some people who care in this world,” one commenter posted.
A dog like Smiley wouldn’t want his friends to feel sad.
Let’s pray for Smiley 🙏🙏🙏
